Weekly Memo August 3rd, 2020

Parents and Students of Silver Lake Elementary,

I hope you all are having a wonderful weekend and you’re staying cool in spite of the hot weather.

Tomorrow, we have our Fire Marshall inspection.  Keep your fingers crossed that all goes well and we are able to move into the school soon.

Thank you to all of you who made your declaration on your Return to Learn options for your kiddos this year.  We are reviewing the responses and are working on how we, as a school, will support your desires for your student’s learning.  More to follow.

There have been a few questions regarding what the district/school will do in the event of a student or teacher contract COVID-19.  Here is the response from the district.

“First of all, nobody who tests positive for COVD-19, whether they are students, faculty, or staff, will be allowed to attend school.  In Utah, we consider education critical to the long-term health and economic success of the state. As such, it makes sense to apply the same quarantine and isolation guidelines to students, teachers, and other employees who work in education that we apply to employees in other essential or critical infrastructure sectors.
Students, teachers, and school employees who are exposed to someone who tests positive for COVID-19 are allowed to go to school if they do not have any symptoms of COVID-19 and they take extra safety precautions.
However, if a student, teacher, or employee lives with someone who tested positive (called a household contact), he or she will not be able to go to school or work during the 14-day quarantine.  The quarantine and isolation guidance for essential sector employees has been used throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and is recommended by the CDC.”

The District’s Q&A information page is still available to you to address any questions that you might still have.  Here is the daily updated link.   https://alpineschools.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/ASD-Reopening-Plan-QA.pdf

Don’t forget, we are having a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on the evening of Monday, the 17th of August at 5:30 PM in conjunction with our Back to School Night.  More information will come.  We will be asking all to wear masks and to social distance for the evening.  We are also limiting the number of families in the building at one time to alleviate the number of people in the building.  There will be signups for time slots.  We ask that only parents, elementary-aged students and younger siblings attend.  You’ll have a short time to meet your student(s) teachers, and get a chance to see our amazing school and then you’ll exit out to the backyard to enjoy a free ice cream cone, etc.

For any 5th and 6th graders who are interested in being on Student Council this year, here is the link to make application, https://forms.gle/e6neDy7ZocHPAA8d7  All applications are due by Wed the 5th by 5:00 PM.

Here is the list of suggested supply items that you’re welcome to get for your students for the year.  This is voluntary, but are most helpful, especially as we are not wanting communal items that will need to be sanitized or quarantined.  Silver Lake Elementary Wish Lists.pdf

We are establishing a School Community Council (SCC).  Serving on our School Community Council is a wonderful way for parents and teachers to contribute and help improve academic performance at our school. The school receives an annual dividend from the school trust lands. Our council decides how these funds will be used.  This year our school will receive $92,256.00 from the School LAND Trust Program. The council reviews and prepares other academic plans for our students each year.  All plans are reviewed for final approval by our school board. Councils also act in an advisory capacity to school and school district administrations.  If you’re interested in service as a member of our SCC, please see the attached candidacy form.  Silver Lake School Community Council Candidate Form.pdf  We need six parents to serve on the council.  If we get more than six, we will hold an online election.  Because we are not in the school yet, you can email me the following information if you desire to serve on our SCC.

Remember to keep your kiddos engaged this summer with Reading and Math. Our Silver Lake Reading and Math Rocks Program will help you do this.   Although we are in the end stretch, don’t let your kiddos ease up on doing their Reading and Math.  If you need me to send out another flyer and log, please let me know.

We will need substitutes for next year.  If interested in becoming a Substitute Teachers, here is a  flyer and a YouTube video about becoming one,  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MrE5_dMsMk&authuser=0
