Weekly Memo September 20, 2020

Parents and Students of Silver Lake Elementary,

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.  It is hard to believe that September is almost over.

Rumors:  I want to address something that I have learned about this weekend.  Apparently, there is a rumor going around that we have an “outbreak” of COVID at Silver Lake.  This is simply not true.  As of right now we only have two confirmed cases that were contracted outside of the school.  Those individuals will be returning to school soon.  We have four others that have been on quarantine because of close contact with someone who was positive for COVID.  None of them have tested positive for the virus.  Additionally, the rumor was that we were covering this up due to fear.  Let me be perfectly clear, I would never cover-up information to you.  I believe in transparency and facing problems straight on.  Like what I’m doing right now.  We at Silver Lake are doing our very best to keep everyone safe and healthy in an environment that is definitively not easy to do the social distancing that we need to do, etc., but we are doing our best.  Just as we are doing our best to get the students caught up from being out of school for 6 months and working within a compressed daily schedule and teaching face-to-face and online.  The teachers and staff are true heroes and certainly deserve accommodation for all their hard work.  If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me directly and allow me to give you straight answers or at least find the straight answers.

Coding Club:  The Coding Club starts this week on Thursday.  It will be at the end of each track for one hour.  The club will run for 8 weeks and then we will start again with the second block for those who didn’t get into the first block, we can only have 22, 1st – 6th-grade students in the club each track and for each block.  The cost is $20.00 for the block and will need to be paid prior to the club starting.

Birthday on Marquee:  Parents can now pay to have their student’s name pop up on our digital marquee on the southwest corner of the school on their birthday.  The sign will say something like, “Happy Birthday to……”  The cost is $5.00 and can be paid online.  The instructions are below.

Here are the instructions on how to make payments online.

Coin Drive:  The Library is sponsoring a Coin Drive next week to raise funds to purchase more books for the library.

Parent-Teacher Conference:  Just to get this on your calendars, we will be doing our Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences on the 7th and 8th of October.  We will be doing a hybrid version of face to face or an online meeting if parents would prefer not to come in to meet face to face with their kiddos teachers.  More information will come on this.  We will also have the Book Fair open during that week.  Here is a flyer about the Book Fair and the Coin Drive.   bookfair.jpg

Pop Tops:  The PTA is collecting pop tabs.  They will be rewarding the class that weighs the most in November with a root beer float party.  The pop tabs go to help families have a place to stay when they have kids that are sick at Primary Children’s hospital.

Coyote Corner Store:  The store will be open again this next Friday, September 25th at the end of the Tracks.

Room Parent Training:  The Room Parent Training has been moved to next week on Tuesday the 29th for Kindergarten-3rd grade at 3:30 in the gym and on Wednesday the 30th for 4th-6th grade.

Fall Break:  Fall Break is the 15th and 16th of October with a Teacher Professional Development Day on the 19th.

Hoodies:  The PTA got the Hoodies in but they were printed by the printers wrong.  They were sent back and we will have replacements this week.

Halloween Parade & Parties:  We will still have the Halloween Parade but it will be done virtually this year.  More information will be provided as we get closer.  Parties will also happen with some modifications as well.
